Testimony: Married to Be Baptized or Baptized to Get Married?

Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking an interest in my story and this blog, which has been a great support to me over the past months.

My name is Cat, I’m 24, and for over a year, my partner and I have been trying to plan our wedding. After a rocky start to our relationship, we’ve been together since 2020. In May 2023, I decided to propose to my partner—an unplanned, no-frills proposal without a ring, but he enthusiastically said “yes.” Since then, we’ve been engaged but have no set wedding date due to financial constraints.

At the same time, I began the process of getting baptized in the Catholic Church, a significant decision for me. However, our situation is complicated: living together without being married goes against Church rules, and financial limitations make organizing even a simple civil wedding difficult.

With the patient and kind support of my priest, we’ve explored various options, but financial challenges—especially my partner’s reliance on welfare benefits—make it impossible to proceed. Family pressure for an extravagant wedding and the loss of social support further complicate matters.

We’ve considered many solutions, but each time, an unexpected obstacle arises. Nonetheless, we remain optimistic. We firmly believe that the tide will turn. Our wedding and my baptism will happen in due time, and we’ll continue building our future with faith, patience, and lo
